Interstellar opens in Kelowna this week.

Interstellar opens in Kelowna this week.

Director Christopher Nolan is best known for the Dark Knight Trilogy, but he also directed Inception and one of my favourites, Memento.

His new movie is probably his biggest epic yet, the highly anticipated Interstellar.

Starring Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway as part of a team of explorers who undertake the most important mission in human history; traveling beyond the galaxy to discover whether mankind has a future among the stars.

The script has been in development for years by Jonathan Nolan, who has collaborated with his brother on most of his movies as well as developing the TV show Person Of Interest.

Nolan says he used movies like Metropolis, 2001: A Space Oddyssey and Blade Runner as his influences while his brother Jonathan visited NASA and studied theoretical physics while researching the script.

To enhance the epic feel, the filmmakers decided to film it on both 35mm and IMAX film and to use practical effects and actual sets instead of special effects whenever possible. However, there is no shortage of special effects.

The all-star cast also includes Jessica Chastain, Ellen Burstyn, Michael Caine, Casey Affleck, John Lithgow, Topher Grace and Matt Damon.

Early reviews have been very positive saying that the movie is as thought-provoking as it is eye-popping.

Even with stiff competition, Disney has decided to release its new animated adventure Big Hero 6 this weekend.

Described as an futuristic action-packed comedy-adventure, it sees a young robotics prodigy and his robot uncover a criminal plot and pull together a team of inexperienced crime fighters to solve the mystery surrounding crimes perpetrated by a masked villain.

While it may not have the music and young princess appeal of Frozen, Disney’s blockbuster last year,  superheroes of all ages may come out in droves as Big Hero 6 is getting excellent notices from the critics.
