Documentary at Creston library examines modern educators' world

“Those who educate children well are more to be honored than parents, for parents only gave life, teachers, the art of living well.” — Aristotle (c. 350 BC)

Most would agree that teaching is indeed a noble profession. After all, education is the key to human advancement. In many cultures through countless ages, teachers have been revered as pillars of society, as they open and nurture the minds of the future. But does this sentiment hold true in North America today?

The Creston and District Public Library invites you to explore the world of the modern educator in its presentation of the documentary film, American Teacher. Research shows that teachers are the most important in-school factor in a child’s success, yet educators are facing so many challenges, including underemployment, large classroom sizes and a large variety of special student needs that many are leaving the profession altogether.

American Teacher reveals the frustrating realities of today’s teachers and the difficulty, and necessity, of attracting talented new educators.

American Teacher will be shown at the library at 2 p.m. June 9. Admission is free. Running time is 80 minutes. For more information, call the library at 250-428-4141.
