A farmers market that’s been called a “treat of the senses” is expanding further into the visual with an inaugural “Art in the Park” event.
The Errington Farmers’ Market, now in its 44th year, is inviting artists of various kinds to set up and create in and amongst the fruits, vegetables and baked goods on Saturday, August 5.
Nicole Shaw, president of the market and an artist herself, said she wanted to give the public a look into the creative process with this event.
“Because, to a lot of people, it’s a mysterious, magical process of how artists begin and where they end up at the end of their painting.”
Dirk Becker, Shaw’s partner, described the market as a “treat of the senses” which gives people a chance to meet and speak with farmers and bakers, and to spend some of their day at the market, rather than get in, buy their fresh fruit and veggies, and get out.
The market already features musical performances, with Lantzville group The Konsorados performing August 5.
With this invitation to artists, it will expand on what is already a cultural experience, Becker said.
The response has been strong so far, with eight artists confirming they will take part, said Shaw.
However there is plenty of room for many more, said Becker, adding that the artists will be sprinkled throughout the market, which takes place at Errington’s community park at 1550 Veterans Rd.
Shaw said she and several other artists taking part in the event will be trying to start and complete a piece between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. that day.
There will also be paints, crayons and more available for children to work on their own art, or doodle on a table that will be covered in newsprint.
Shaw is also encouraging artists who take part to display their finished piece at Errington’s Hi Neighbour Day art show on August 19 at the Errington Hall. Setup runs from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on August 18.
Any artists interested in taking part in the farmers’ market’s first Art in the Park event can set up wherever they would like at the park, said Shaw.
However, for those who would also like to sell their work, there is a $15 drop-in fee, and a spot must be reserved by Aug. 2 by emailing manager@erringtonfarmersmarket.ca.
