For some people, music can be an avenue for cultural understanding.
This weekend, residents of the Harbour City will have the opportunity to experience Indian culture without having to leave the Island.
On Sunday (Sept. 27) the Bollywood Masala Orchestra and Dancers of India: Spirit of India will be performing at the Port Theatre. The show is co-sponsored by the Central Vancouver Island Multicultural Society.
“One of the key ways that people really get engaged in understanding other cultures, one of the first ways, is food and music,” said Hilde Schlosar, executive director of the society. “You gain understanding through music and see similarities and differences.”
The show was created by artistic director Rahis Bharti and features dancers, singers and acrobats. It combines a mixture of Indian and Western instruments, including bass drums, tabla, dholak, clarinet and more.
Tickets range from $5-$40. For information and to purchase tickets, please visit www.bollywoodmasalaorchestra.com.
