Thursday’s third A Splash of Red fundraiser at the Caetani Cultural Centre lived up to the late Sveva Caetani’s expectations.
Taking place at Caetani’s former estate on Pleasant Valley Road, left to the community for the purpose of engaging those in the arts, and as a hub of culture and creativity, a splash of rain did not dampen the spirits of tireless volunteers and art patrons for the al fresco dinner and art auction.
“The event raised more than $10,000 to the Caetani Cultural Centre for its indoor sprinkler system needed to open up the house to the public,” said local chanteuse Judy Rose, one of the event founders, along with Angelika Jaeger.
“All in all, it was a grand evening,” added Rose, who not only could be seen running around making sure all the seats were dry and tables were ready for dinner after the downpour, but even belted out the classic That’s Amore to the crowd’s delight.
Joining her as dinner time entertainment was a special performance of Funiculi Funicula by Welsh tenor Peter Karrie, of Phantom of the Opera fame, with Vernon’s very own soprano Melina Moore. The two took time to partake in the event from their current tour of their popular The Phantom Returns concert, which has them performing around the B.C. Interior.
Then there was the food.
A delectable salad starter and main course of lemon and herb roast chicken with all the trimmings, prepared by Basket Case Picnics, was topped by an even more decadent chocolate dessert topped with berries and whipped cream. Prosecco, wine and grappa also flowed freely.
Presiding over the live art auction, featuring 20 paintings and sculptures by some of the Okanagan’s most respected talents, was Victor Noakes of Vernon’s Antique Imports, whose patient urging and upping of bids contributed to the event’s success.
