Joëlle Rabu in concert – with Nico Rhodes
The fourth performance in Lakes District Arts Council’s (LDAC) eleventh season takes place on Wednesday, Jan. 25 at The First Mennonite Church in Burns Lake. Doors open at 6:45 p.m., and the show starts at 7:30 p.m. sharp.
Joëlle Rabu in concert promises an intimate evening of musicality and theatricality. The concert features songs performed in english, french and spanish, and presents a special tribute to torch song era greats – in addition to some moments spiced with laughter.
Edith Piaf fans will be thrilled, as will fans of other popular vocalists. As one critic summed it up, “Rabu is Piaf, Bette Midler and Carol Burnett, all rolled into one extraordinary performer.” Joëlle is accompanied on piano by her son, Nico Rhodes, an exceptionally talented arranger and musician in his own right. An audience member’s observation of Rhodes’ musical ability, “Breathtakingly fresh sounds and style radiate from this young musician whose hands effortlessly fly across a keyboard, leaving us in utter amazement and jumping to our feet at the end of a solo.”

Mozart’s Don Giovanni in The Met: live in HD broadcast
Please note: Jan. 29 is the correct date for this Met: live in HD performance. The LDAC and the Beacon Theatre needed to change the date advertised prior to the holidays, because of the Beacon’s first-run movie commitments in January.
The first performance in the winter/spring 2017 series of opera co-presentations by the Beacon Theatre and the Lakes District Arts Council will feature Mozart’s perennial favourite Don Giovanni, broadcast in HD from The Metropolitan Opera in New York. Doors open at 12:30 p.m., and the broadcast starts at 1 p.m. sharp. All tickets are $12, and are available at the door (cash only, please).
Aided by his ingenious librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte, Mozart approached his operatic retelling of the Don Juan myth from a point of view that is neither tragic nor entirely comic, but rather lighthearted, urbane, and ironic. We follow the title character and his earthy comic sidekick, Leporello, through a series of encounters that begins with a fatal duel, moves back and forth between the humorous and the sentimental, and ends with the protagonist being dragged down to hell. Simon Keenlyside stars as Don Giovanni, with Adam Platchetka as Leporello, Hibla Gerzmava as Donna Anna, Malin Bystrom as Donna Elvira and Serena Malfi as Zerlina.
