Vermeer and Music: The Art of Love and Leisure screens Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Vernon Performing Arts Centre.

The Vernon and District Performing Arts Centre Society and the Vernon Public Art Gallery present the final installment in a series of three film screenings showcasing the works of great artists.

Vermeer and Music: The Art of Love and Leisure screens  Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Performing Arts Centre.

The film showcases the exhibition of the same name hosted in 2013 by the National Gallery in London showcasing the works of Johannes Vermeer, the painter of the famous Girl with a Pearl Earring.

Vermeer and Music also reveals exclusive behind-the-scenes moments of the exhibition’s preparation, which normally go unseen by the public.

Both the exhibition and the film focus on Vermeer’s relationship with music, displaying his works alongside 17th century instruments.

Music was one of the most popular themes in Dutch painting, providing insight into both the portrait sitter’s life and Dutch society in the 17th century. New research is also made public for the first time, showing how Vermeer’s technique and materials affected his works.

Host Tim Marlow goes beyond the exhibition to tell the story of Vermeer’s life, and in doing so demonstrates in detail many of his other captivating works.

This cinematic exploration will take your fascination and enjoyment of Vermeer’s life and work to a new level.

Tickets for Vermeer and Music are $18 for adults, $13 for students, and are available at the Ticket Seller box office, 250-549-7469, www.ticketseller.ca.
