There’s fiction, and then there’s fabulous fiction, and Fernie is about to learn the difference as the Fabulous Fiction tour arrives in town.
Acclaimed authors Valerie Compton and Rosemary Nixon are trekking through the west with their Fabulous Fiction tour, and their stop in Fernie (to be emceed by Angie Abdou) is sure to bring some welcome heat to the wintry slopes.
Valerie Compton’s novel Tide Road, a splendidly nuanced chronicle of how abdicating one’s life leaves unexpected legacies, has been praised as “a stark and beautiful book” by Quill & Quire. A devastating portrait of a woman struggling to reconcile an abusive past with her present existence, Tide Road is resplendent in atmosphere and subtle in characterization, resulting in a novel rich in haunting truths.
Kalila, by Rosemary Nixon, is a sensitive, nuanced portrait of a strange horror we all fear to face. Lauded as “exquisitely written” by the Globe and Mail, Kalila follows the diverging tangents of two young parents whose child has been diagnosed with a variety of bewildering medical issues. Switching perspectives and voices highlight this poetic account of grief, resulting in a sensitive novel told with grace, honesty, and ultimately uplifting humour.
Valerie and Rosemary are excited to bring their fabulous fiction to new audiences, and hope to make some new friends along the way.
Valerie and Rosemary will be reading at the Fernie Heritage Library, 6 Feb 2012 – 7 pm.
