The University of Victoria’s School of Music’s renowned quartet-in-residence, the Lafayette String Quartet, performs Mozart, Beethoven and Coulthard in a Feb. 7 concert inspired by joy and gratitude.
Mozart’s String Quartet in B-flat major “is the most joyful quartet he ever wrote,” says Ann Elliott-Goldschmid, UVic School of Music instructor and LSQ violinist. Beethoven’s hauntingly beautiful String Quartet No. 15 Op. 132 was written immediately following a terrible illness.
“This piece evokes enormous passion,” Elliott-Goldschmid said. “You really get a sense of Beethoven’s renewed strength in this music.”
Written in response to the atrocities witnessed in his lifetime, Canadian composer Jean Coulthard’s String Quartet No. 2: Threnody is described by Elliott-Goldschmid as “a plea, with just as much relevance today as when the music was composed.”
The Lafayette String Quartet performs Saturday, Feb. 7 from 8 to 10 p.m. in the Phillip T. Young Recital Hall at UVic. Tickets are $25 from the UVic Ticket Centre 250-721-8480 or tickets.uvic.ca and at the door.
