Fall film series kicks off next week in Chilliwack

Chilliwack International Film Series to entertain movie lovers throughout the fall

As the weather cools, the big screens at Cottonwood 4 Cinemas heat up with another fall season of the Chilliwack International Film Series.

This year’s lineup runs every Wednesday evening from Sept. 27 to Nov. 1, culminating in a ShortFest finale on Nov. 8. All films start at 7 p.m.

Hosted by the Chilliwack Community Arts Council in partnership with the Toronto International Film Festival Circuit, this semi-annual series features weekly screenings of six internationally acclaimed feature films:

Sept. 27: Maudie – Canada, Ireland / 115 min / PG / Biography, Drama. An arthritic Nova Scotia woman works as a housekeeper while she hones her skills as an artist and eventually becomes a beloved figure in the community. Directed by: Aisling Walsh. Starring: Sally Hawkins, Ethan Hawke, Karl Matchett, Kate Ross, Zachary Bennett.

Oct. 4: Their Finest – UK / 117 min / 14A / Drama, Comedy. A former secretary, newly appointed as a scriptwriter for propaganda films, joins the cast and crew of a major production while the Blitz rages around them. Directed by: Lone Scherfig. Starring: Gemma Arterton, Sam Claflin, Bill Nighy.

Oct. 11: The Trip to Spain – UK / 108 min / PG / Comedy, Drama. Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon embark on a six-part episodic road trip through Spain, sampling the restaurants, eateries, and sights along the way. Directed by: Michael Winterbottom. Starring: Steve Coogan, Rob Brydon, Rebecca Johnson, Claire Keelan.

Oct. 18: The Big Sick – USA / 120 min / 14A / Comedy, Romance. Pakistan-born comedian Kumail Nanjiani and grad student Emily Gordon fall in love but struggle as their cultures clash. When Emily contracts a mysterious illness, Kumail finds himself forced to face her feisty parents, his family’s expectations, and his true feelings. Directed by: Michael Showalter. Starring: Kumail Nanjiani, Zoe Kazan, Holly Hunter.

Oct. 25: The Commune – Denmark, Sweden, Netherlands / 112 min / 14A / Drama. A story about the clash between personal desires, solidarity and tolerance in a Danish commune in the 1970s. Directed by: Thomas Vinterberg. Starring: Ulrich Thomsen, Trine Dyrholm, Fares Fares.

Nov. 1: Tulip Fever – UK, USA / 107 min / NR / Drama, Romance. An artist falls for a young married woman while he’s commissioned to paint her portrait during the Tulip mania of 17th century Amsterdam. Directed by: Justin Chadwick. Starring: Alicia Vikander, Christoph Waltz, Dane DeHaan, Judi Dench.

Nov. 8: ShortFest – A special screening featuring an imaginative selection of five Canadian short films: If ou le rouge perdu (Red of the Yew Tree), Blind Vaysha, Fluffy, Nutag-Homeland, and Four Faces of the Moon. Series passes are available for purchase online through chilliwackartscouncil.com as well as in-person at the Chilliwack Community Arts Council (20-5725 Vedder Rd.), The Book Man Chilliwack (45939 Wellington Ave.), and Cottonwood 4 Cinemas (45380 Luckakuck Way) for $35 per person.

Each series pass includes a bonus ShortFest pass for the Nov. 8 screening. Tickets for individual films, and ShortFest may be purchased at Cottonwood 4 Cinemas for $6 per person on the day of each screening.
