Spring has sprung, the fiddleheads are up and the area’s best fiddlers are ready to put on a Family Contra Dance.
On Saturday, April 25, the Funtime Fiddlers will blossom at the Big Yellow Merville Hall and will play for your dancing pleasure as they rock the rafters with tunes. With a stage full of budding musicians keeping a driving beat, caller June Cannon will march the dancers around the floor to create a dance extraordinaire. Dances are taught on the spot.
Doors open at 7 p.m. and at 7:30 the music starts and the dancing begins. Single dancers are more than welcome as they can pair up with anyone during the Contras and the Contra sets last about 15 to 20 minutes per dance.
There will also be waltzes and reels, jigs, swing and foxtrots for your enjoyment in between the called Contra dances. There is a dance for everyone, even the springtime wallflowers. The hall is warm and inviting and the fiddle club tries to create a friendly, welcoming atmosphere that you can thoroughly enjoy and participate in.
So next Saturday, April 25, follow a furrow to the Big Yellow Merville Dance Hall, right on the Old Island Highway, between Campbell River and Courtenay. Cost is $10/adults, $5/youth and you can come as a family for $22.00.
