2016 seems to be racing toward its end.
This coming Friday, Dec. 9, the Williams Lake Film Club is already screening its last film of this year.
And we decided to show a great film for the whole family, from about eight years up to 98 years.
Fly Away Home will be shown at 7 p.m. in the Gibraltar Room. Back doors open at 6:30 p.m.
Director of this Academy nominated U.S. film is Carroll Ballard with Jeff Daniels, Anna Paquin and Dana Delany playing the major roles.
The film was released in 1996 and runs for 107 minutes. Filming locations are mostly in Ontario, California and North Carolina.
Many of you probably still remember some story about Canada Geese being guided on their first trip south by ultra light plane.
That is exactly the story this film is based on. Amy, played by Anna Paquin, is only 13 years old when her mother is killed in a car accident in New Zealand.
Now Amy has to return to her father in Canada.
She has barely any memories of him as her parents had divorced a long time back.
Her father turns out to be an eccentric inventor and artist, always full of ideas, some of them pretty crazy.
At the beginning it is hard for Amy to adjust to this rather strange man and her new life with him and his friends in a new country … that is until she discovers a nest of goose eggs that were abandoned when developers began tearing up a local forest.
With her help the eggs hatch and Amy becomes “Mama Goose,” as the babies imprint on her as their mother. They have many wonderful moments together, but the summer is slowly coming to an end, and it is time for the geese to fly south, but how? After all, they have no “real” mother to show them how…
This unfolding story is just so much fun to watch, the goslings are absolutely adorable, the various roles are perfectly cast and the cinematography is incredible. This is an all-around wonderful film, it will make you laugh, bring some tears to your eyes and hope to your hearts — a perfect film for the whole family.
As Siskel and Ebert said: “Two Thumbs Up, Way Up!”
After a short break filled with Christmas baking and mulled Apple Cider we will show an additional 40 minute documentary of biologists and scientist doing the actual trials with actual geese.
This is so interesting and so well done that we simply could not keep it from you.
Also, as this is the time of the season, please bring a donation for the food bank. They are always looking forward to hear from us as you have been known to be most gracious about helping out.
Admission at the door is $10 regular adult, $8 for Film Club Members, $6 for seniors (65+) and students, High School and TRU. Children under 12 have free admission.
Fly Away Home is also our last film screened at the Gibraltar Room.
The second part of our season will start on Friday, Jan. 6, 2017 at our new location, in the Central Cariboo Arts Centre, the city’s old fire hall.
We have already purchased a larger screen to be installed by that time.
Our new schedule will be available at our screening on Dec. 9.
