Film commission event visits La La Land

Seventh annual fundraiser supports work of the film commission

Oak Bay film fans are invited to the  Vancouver Island South Film & Media Commission’s seventh annual Oscar Viewing Red Carpet Gala on Sunday, Feb. 26.

Festivities get underway at 4 p.m. in the Victoria Marriott Inner Harbour.

This year jazz and Hollywood come together in an event inspired by the acclaimed movie La La Land starring Emma Stone as the aspiring actress and Canadian Ryan Gosling the struggling jazz pianist.

The gala benefits the non-profit film commission with funds helping promote economic development in the region through the local film industry.

A Red Carpet Champagne Reception opens the evening including music, photos, a complimentary glass of champagne and an auction room set up “film set” style. The GoBid.ca online auction, silent auction and live auction will be part of the fundraising, including mystery envelopes sold at $20 each.

Seating and crudités in the Rose Ballroom follow, with a musical performance by event host Maria Manna and Craig Henderson with a breakout swing dance from the troupe Red Hot Swing.

Guests can select their favourite Oscar winners in all categories and submit for prizes.

Following the opening performance and over dinner, attendees will watch a live, multi-screen stream of the 89th Annual Academy Awards.

Prizes, mystery envelopes and special auction items will be offered throughout the show.  Tickets are $100 each.
