Finding art a new, loving home

10th Annual Art from the Attic sale at TOSH In Qualicum Beach April 11-24

Have art you no longer love?

Why not sell it to a new enamoured owner at The Old School House Arts Centre’s 10th annual Art from the Attic sale?

“It’s really a lot of fun,” said TOSH executive director Corinne James. “The paintings go on and have a nice new life.”

According to a news release, interested sellers can bring their art into TOSH on April 11 from 10 a.m. to noon. James said “anything two dimensional” will be accepted into the sale, but sculpture and other 3D art will not. Working artists are also invited to sell their own pieces, but James said that the pieces should be old or in a style the artist no longer paints.

Each piece must be accompanied by a $1 registration fee and an entry form, which can be picked up in advance at the arts centre. On the form, the seller will list two prices: one for the first week of the sale and a reduced price for the second week. James said the staff at TOSH will be available to help set prices if needed. Prices typically range from $5 to thousands of dollars, but James said the most popular price point is around $200-400.

As this is a consignment sale, the seller will receive 60 per cent of the work’s final sale price and TOSH will take 40 per cent.

To skip the chaotic crowds, there is the option of registering early for $5.

The sale itself opens to the public almost as soon at the paintings hit the gallery’s walls on April 11 at noon. April 17 will see prices marked down and the sale will end on April 24.

The Art for the Attic sale has grown a lot in its ten-year run. There were 75 pieces submitted in the first year and last year saw 650 paintings in the show, James said.

“There’s not one square-inch not covered,” she said of the gallery’s walls.
