Comox Valley Art Gallery’s 2017 inaugural artistic program Extracting Narratives opens Jan. 21 and runs until Feb. 15.
This thematic program features contemporary artists Jeroen Witvliet and Neil McClelland in the exhibition All Tomorrow’s Parties/The Perfect Nowhere and a community engagement exhibition Source Material, by North Island College and Emily Carr visual art students and alumni.
As painters and interdisciplinary artists, Witvliet (All Tomorrow’s Parties) and McClelland (The Perfect Nowhere) have developed an extensive exhibition of new works that include large scale paintings and site responsive work that draw attention to shifting relations found in daily life and varied stories told through the painted image. The artists describe their project as a collection that “creates fictive, could be landscapes that allude to something perhaps mythological, historical or some possible future.”
On Jan. 21 from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m., the community will engage with the artists during a free Make Art Workshop that includes an artist-led walk and collaborative art making project in CVAG’s newly renovated lower level studio. An artist talk and opening celebration will follow at 2 p.m. in the gallery. On Feb. 7 at noon, the artists will give a talk about their work in the Stan Hagan Theatre at North Island College.
Source Material is a concurrent assemblage of photographs and sculptural objects by local visual arts students and alumni from NIC/ECUAD featured in CVAG’s Community Space.
CVAG is open Tuesday to Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. throughout the run of Extracting Narratives. Admission to the gallery and the Make Art Project workshop is by donation.
