Matta Schaal is this season’s first of an eclectic lineup of artists to grace our summer gallery at the Denman Arts Centre.
Fortunately for us, she has put down roots on Denman after experiences travelling the world and honing her art.
Visiting Schaal’s studio-of-the-forest was a step into a miniaturized art gallery – and the “tour” was conducted by the enthusiastic, smiling artist.
Schaal works with photographs, pen and ink and paint.
Her eye and then her camera capture the images that tantalize her and beg to be worked with.
The walls of the studio are covered with vibrant surrealistic images and each amazing piece holds many questions to be asked and many puzzles to be solved.
Following Matta in June is a show featuring the woodwork of Dr. David Scruton and the paintings of Jane Fawkes. Show #3 (also in June) will be a solo show of paintings by Katarina Meglic.
In July, Laurie Montemurro, Roxanne Cowles-MacPhail and Sam Hesse will combine talents to produce a multi-dimensional show of dance, the spoken word and wood carvings.
And our last show will feature two artists with different styles and subject matter – the acrylic paintings of Louise Fraser and Jason McDonald.
The Denman Arts Centre is in “downtown” Denman, 1016 Northwest Road.
If you attend the opening night, you will be able to chat with this talented young woman. Opening night is Thursday May 25 at 7 p.m.
The show will run from Friday May 26 until Tuesday June 6. From Monday to Saturday, the gallery is open at 11 a.m. until 4 p.m.
On Sundays, it is open from 1 p.m. until 3:45 p.m.
