Singer-songwriter and acoustic finger-style guitarist Joe Stanton is in town for Folk at the MAC.

Stanton will be performing at the McMillan Arts Centre on Friday, Jan. 20. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the show starts at 7 p.m.

Tickets are $15 or $12 for Oceanside Community Arts Council members. Tickets are available at the MAC box office (133 McMillan St., Parksville), online at www.mcmillanartscentre.com or at Cranky Dog Music in Parksville. Any remaining tickets will be sold at the door.

The MAC is kicking off its 2017 season with Stanton’s folk performance. The theme for the evening will be stories and songs with a bit of instrumental finger-picking guitar thrown in.

Stanton’s philosophy of “playing wherever they’ll listen” has taken him and his Martin D28 on a 30-year journey from his favourite haunts close to his home on the Sunshine Coast and regular stops throughout Washington and Oregon states to a concert in a hot air balloon over the Swiss Alps.

For the last year or so, Stanton has been touring around the northwest and up and down Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast.

In 2013, Stanton had the opportunity to play aboard the historic Canadian VIA rail train from Vancouver to Toronto, playing train songs and picking the guitar for the 3,000-mile journey.

His acoustic guitar style has been likened to his music heroes including Leo Kottke, Chet Atkins and Bruce Cockburn. Over the years, Stanton has released five CDs which have styles ranging from bluegrass to contemporary-folk to alt-country.
