A theatre company born and raised on the Island is bringing its fringed-out version of its debut production MUSE to the Nanaimo Fringe Festival, running August 14 through 24 at venues around Nanaimo.
In Other Words Theatre is Nanaimo’s newest theatre company. The play, MUSE, happens inside the head of Grace—a musically gifted woman locked up in a mental institution—and uses the audience as her imagination. Over the course of the play, Grace and the audience explore her kooky outlook on life, her newly turned-upside-down world, and the process of creating a song together.
As the play transports the audience inside Grace’s off-balance mind and creative spirit, everyone gets a taste of life on the fringe of society.
MUSE brings comedy, creativity and a heartfelt story of love, loss and absolution together in a delightful, warm-hearted hour of memories, music and knock knock jokes. The play will take place at Harbour City Theatre at 25 Victoria Rd. on Aug. 15, 16, 17, 21, 22 and 23. Tickets are $14 and available at the door or online.
A festival pass is $45 and gets ticket-holders into any five shows of their choice.
Eight companies will be performing at the festival and 100 per cent of the ticket revenues are given back to the performers.
Christmas in Bakersfield is coming all the way from California and was given an A+ rating by the Cincinnati City Beat. The one-man-show features actor and comedian Les Kurkendaal.
When Mike brings his boyfriend Les home to Bakersfield to meet his very right wing Caucasian Conservative parents, he realizes that he forgot to tell them one very important detail, that Les is Black.
The show will be performed at The Nanaimo Museum, 100 Museum Way on Aug. 14, 15, 16, 17, 23 and 24.
The preview night takes place Aug. 13 at 7 p.m. at Harbour City Theatre.
