The Vernon Film Society’s next film will be Gabrielle, showing at the Towne Cinema Monday, Feb. 17.
Canada’s official submission for Best Foreign Language film at the 2014 Academy Awards, Louise Archambault’s film is a stunning, tender story about a developmentally challenged young woman’s quest for independence and sexual freedom.
Living in a group home, musically talented Gabrielle (Gabrielle Marion-Rivard) has found love with Martin (Alexandre Landry), a fellow member of her choir. They want to explore their feelings physically, but are not allowed.
Convinced that living alone will allow her to have the intimate relationship she so desperately craves, Gabrielle tries valiantly to prove she can be independent.
Gabrielle’s rock is her sister, Sophie, who tries to help her, but knows that full independence will never be possible. Unlike the troubled relationship the women have with their mother, Sophie and Gabrielle find immeasurable strength and inspiration in each other.
At the core of the film is the heartfelt performance by Marion-Rivard, who has Williams syndrome in real life. Her effusive giddiness is contagious, and her drive is unrelenting.
Gabrielle is a captivating film about tolerance and happiness, but, above all, it is a story about love.
“(Archambault’s) second feature is a deeply affecting tale of difference, dignity and the healing power of song,” said T’Cha Dunlevy of The Montreal Gazette.
Gabrielle will screen Monday, Feb. 17 at the Towne Cinema at the regular times of 5:15 and 7:45 p.m. Tickets are available one week ahead at the Towne Cinema and the Bean Scene Coffee House for $7.
