Gabriola artist Tawny Capon exhibits work at Hive Emporium

Capon's artwork series Thirty Variations on a Theme inspired by Bach's classical piece, Goldberg Variations.

Artist Tawny Maclachlan Capon loves fabric.

At first she admired fabric as a ballet dancer through the costumes she wore. Then she began taking classes at the Art Gallery of Ontario and worked in the wardrobe department for the  National Ballet of Canada.

Her love of fabric led to her creating mixed media pieces and exhibiting them.

She presents three series of her work at Gabriola’s Hive Emporium, located at 9-575 North Rd., until Dec. 4.

She presents Conversations; My Echo, My Shadow and Me and Thirty Variations on a Theme.

Thirty Variations was inspired by Bach’s classical piece Goldberg Variations.

“Each piece of art has 30 variations in it,” said Capon. “I use the same material but put it in pieces in 30 different ways.”

Capon said she extrapolated on a historical image that had the music at the top of the page and figures for dancers at the bottom.

My Echo, My Shadow and Me is about Capon’s personal identity. She said the piece, which is stretched and stitched on fabric, is about living in the present and not dwelling on the past nor looking too far into the future.

Conversations is about the discussions in the mind.

“The idea is of all the conversations in our mind … with repetitive energy that can go on in our mind,” said Capon.

She said she’s excited to show her work and discuss it with viewers.

“It’s really wonderful to show my work. I love showing it,” said Capon, adding she can spend hours creating her work by herself so loves to share it with others.

There is an artist talk Saturday (Nov. 26) at 2 p.m.
