Gabriola Arts Council seeks artists for Canada 150 mural project

The Gabriola Arts Council is seeking artists to create a mural that focuses on the island's history and culture for Canada 150.

The Gabriola Arts Council is celebrating the history of the island with an artistic endeavour for Canada 150 celebrations.

The council is commissioning a mural for the Gabriola Community Hall thanks to a grant from the Nanaimo Foundation, which is managing funds for Canada 150 celebrations, slated for next summer.

Artists are asked to submit their proposal by Jan 15 by e-mailing it to sunstone@shaw.ca or dropping it off at the arts council office, located at 476 South Rd.

Designs must be no larger than 4.8 metres wide by three metres high.

The mural will be created using sheets of crezon plywood, which will be mounted on the hall’s siding with spacers behind the work to allow circulation.

The mural must depict Gabriola history from a historical and cultural perspective.

The artist or team of artists chosen will receive a $5,000 honorarium, which includes materials and installation.

The selection will be made by members of the Community Hall Board and representatives from the Gabriola Arts Council, Gabriola Museum and from the Snuneymuxw First Nation.

The selected artist will be notified Jan. 31 and the installation must be completed by May 2017.
