The Vernon Public Art Gallery is gearing up for its second big bash of the summer with the addition of its new youth ambassador.
Kristin Burns will be working on the gallery’s third annual Riot on the Roof, which takes place after the VPAG’s main fundraiser, the 25th annual Midsummer’s Eve of the Arts.
“She brings with her a variety of skills and talents that I’m sure will have a positive impact on our annual Riot on the Roof event this year,” said the VPAG’s executive director Dauna Grant.
Burns is entering the interdisciplinary master of fine arts program at the University of British Columbia Okanagan (UBCO) campus this fall, having obtained her bachelor of fine arts at the school.
She is also a studio artist and is the president of the North Okanagan Artists Alternative.
The youth ambassador position focuses on engaging the 16-to-25 age demographic through a variety of activities and events as well as assisting with general gallery operational duties.
Burns will be re-inventing the VPAG’s annual summer wrap-up event Riot on the Roof. The free for all ages alternative art and music event will take place Aug. 27 on the roof of the Parkade, located above the art gallery on 31st Street.
Burns intends to make this year’s party bigger and better.
So far the event boasts two performance stages, where an array of local musicians will show off their talent, she said.
A unique range of alternative, interactive and installation art, as well as an open mic for poetry slams and spoken word will also entertain event-goers.
“This is only the third year that the Vernon Public Art Gallery has hosted Riot on the Roof, however, the enthusiasm and ideas being generated are already amazing. I’m excited to work with the youth of the community. It’s going to be a great summer,” said Burns.
