Phil, a middle-aged father, is frustrated with the direction his life has taken.
But … he has a plan — sell everything and move his wife and two teenagers to the desert. He has, unfortunately, neglected to mention this to his family. Through their discovery of the true reason for the garage sale and the wonderfully strange collection of characters that attend — a cranky neighbour, two bargain fanatics and the disheveled Billie Boyce — comes a delightful day-in-the-life comedy and some surprising resolutions.
The Garage Sale, opening on Surrey Little Theatre’s (SLT) stage on Jan. 25, is a comedy written by award-winning B.C. playwright David King and directed by Miles Lavkulich.
“The characters in the play are what drew me to this script,” said Lavkulich. “They are fun, easily recognizable, family members and neighbours — some maybe a little too recognizable. From the over-enthusiastic shoppers to the nosy neighbour we’ve all known, and possibly lived next door to, these characters are just too real and too much fun not to experience.”
Lavkulich was the lighting designer for SLT’s 2016 production of The Last Lifeboat, the play that won the Fraser Valley Zone Festival and then the provincial competition that year.
“During my experience with The Last Lifeboat, I was blown away by the enthusiasm, energy and dedication of the SLT team. And this production is shaping up to be the same as set designers, painters, costumers, props people and stage managers have all jumped on board to work on this incredible Canadian comedy.
“And let’s be honest, we could all use a good laugh. January is the time people most need to laugh, it’s post-Christmas, it’s dark, there are bills to pay from the holidays, and resolutions to already say good-bye too. But watching a family have a meltdown as they deal with each other and the people around them? That’s a perfect cure.”
The play includes Langley talents Holly Zonneveld in the role of Billie, Eric Ritchie in the role of Neil, and Sara Lohnes as the show’s producer.
Rounding out the cast are Cale Walde as Phil (Cloverdale), Kelli Colley as Anna (Surrey), Jane Mantle as Lois (Surrey), Kim Waite as Nan (Surrey), Brittany Vesterback as Randi (Surrey) and Karis Duncalfe as Pam (Surrey).
The Garage Sale can be seen at SLT, located at 7027 184 St., from Jan. 25 to Feb. 24. The play runs Thursdays to Saturdays at 8 p.m., with three Sunday matinees on Feb. 4, 11 and 18 at 2 p.m.
