Get on up for Riot on the Roof

The Vernon Public Art Gallery’s sixth annual night of alternative art for youth happens on top of the downtown Vernon parkade Saturday.

It’s the party on the rooftop that no one under 25 wants to miss.

All are welcome to the Vernon Public Art Gallery’s sixth annual Riot on the Roof, which takes place on top of the city parkade Saturday at 7 p.m.

Gallery youth ambassadors Kevin Robertson and Nikita Gush are the organizers of this year’s sixth annual event and together have brought their creative ideas and hard work to produce what is being called “a spectacular event.”

A night of alternative art aimed at engaging young people aged 16 to 25, this year’s Riot will feature two stages of live music, graffiti artists, installation art, live painting, chalk art, spoken word poetry, break dancing, and much more.

“Riot on the Roof carves out a much needed space for youth to express and expose themselves to affordable and diverse art forms in Vernon,” said VPAG executive director Dauna Kennedy Grant.

The gallery has already offered up a few participatory events leading up to the Riot with its inaugural Camera Phone Photography Contest and its Take Part in Street Art, which took place Friday at the Avenue Market.

“Every year Riot on the Roof changes and develops, offering new and exciting ways to showcase local talent and inspire youth to get involved with art in our community. Last year, Riot on the Roof was enjoyed by upwards of 600 people and I look forward to seeing a great turnout again this year,” said Kennedy Grant.

Tickets for Riot on the Roof are $10 each and can be purchased at the VPAG (located at the base of the parkade at 3228 31st Ave., online at vernonpublicartgallery.com, or at the Bean Scene coffee house.
