Get on ‘yer’ kilt for Piping in the Park

Registration for both the adult and youth bands will take place at the House of Dwarfs Sept. 3

The Kalamalka Highlanders Pipe Band, in its 30th year as one of Vernon and district’s pipe bands, is just finishing a very busy summer.

At a time when most pipe bands take the summer off, the KHPB and its youth band, the Arran Campbell Memorial Pipe Band, have been very busy, said Norm Crerar, with the Highlanders.

“Parades in Lumby, Penticton and Falkland, community fund raising events such as Do It For Dad and the big one, the Okanagan Military Tattoo 2014, kept everyone on the move,” he said.

The new piping season is about to begin with  the official start at Polson Park Thursday from 7 to 8 p.m.

Both bands will be in attendance and some of their dancing and singing friends will also be joining them.

Folks should bring a lawn chair and sit and listen or join in the singing.

“We have had a great summer and we are looking forward to the new season,” said pipe major Gord Mathers. “Since our appearances this summer and especially at the Tattoo, we have had a lot of interest in folks joining our bands.”

Band members will be on hand to explain the learning opportunities the bands provide at Thursday’s event.

Registration for both the adult and youth bands will take place at the House of Dwarfs daycare, #108-5145 26th St. Sept. 3 at 6 p.m. for the youth band and Sept. 4 at 6 p.m. for the adult band.
