Juliana Cedanna’s costume is a bit of a mishmash, but a suitable salute to the 1980s – the era of MTV, teased hair, ripped jeans, neon, and endearing sitcoms.
It’s got a little bit of Madonna in it, a bit of Michael Jackson and Sheila E., says Cedanna, who is organizing the Ridge Meadows Hospice Society’s latest fundraiser: The Awesome ’80s – Blast from The Past.
“I grabbed whatever I had and just put it together.”
Luckily, she didn’t have trouble tracking down leg warmers, neon tights and off-shoulder sweaters as ’80s era clothes are making a come-back.
“The colours, the crop tops, the really ugly pants – we didn’t have a hard time finding them,” says Cedanna with a laugh.
Her enthusiasm for the event has been rubbing off on everyone in the office.
“The awesome ’80s have brought up a lot of fun memories for a lot of people,” she says.
Cedanna’s colleagues have been sharing photos of themselves from the 1980s and reminiscing about poodle perms.
“We’ve really gotten into it,” she adds.
“I know our volunteers and board members are all talking about it. It’s like we’ve gone back in time and brought back fun memories. We all want to relive that. The ’80s was the best of time, really.”
Cedanna says you too can relive the 1980s – all for a good cause on Friday.
Come dressed as your favourite 1980s pop-star or don your classic ’80s attire.
The fundraiser will feature music by Almost Famous, a duo comprised of Steve Halfnights and Samuel Robertson Technical School teacher Wes Reamsbottom.
Latin Flavour Fitness will treat the crowd to an 80s dance performance and you’ll have a chance to try your luck at a door prize, toonie toss or sign up for the raffle.
Cedanna hopes the event raises between $2,500 to $3,000 for the hospice and its volunteer-run bereavement and palliative programs.
