Get ready to get up off your feet at this year’s Strawberry Dance.

It’s jointly presented by the North and South Saanich Agricultural Society, Brentwood Bay Community Association and Saanichton Village Association on Saturday, June 10 at the Saanich Fairground. The Dance is a farm tradition, dating back to the 1930s, which celebrates the end of the June strawberry season.

This year the Dance also acts as a fundraiser for renovations to the RCMP barn at the fairground, where the fall farmer’s market is held followed by the winter craft fair.

“We’re trying to spruce that up before Christmas,” says Central Saanich Councillor Bob Thompson, who has been volunteering with the Dance for the past four years.

Additional money will go towards supporting other building projects at the Saanich Fairground and the recently-approved Performance Stage in Brentwood Bay’s Pioneer Park.

The event will see a 50/50 draw and a silent auction to raise funds for the projects, along with treats like homemade strawberry shortcake made with fresh-picked strawberries donated by local farms.

Back again this year for your entertainment is the popular party band Shaky Ground, who is set to play all the favourite dance hits from the ’60s until now.

“It’s a really good rock ‘n’ roll band. And if you like dancing – last year was a big success, we had people dancing in the aisle and this year will be no different,” says Thompson.

Doors open at 7:30 p.m. for this adult-only event. Tickets are $15 each or $25 for a couple and are available in advance only at the Saanich Fairgrounds office, Breadstuffs Bakery in Brentwood Bay and Fresh Cup Roastery Cafe in Saanichton.
