A movie about an aboriginal all-female soul quartet is the next offering from TheatreOne’s Fringe Flicks series.
The Sapphires, based on the smash 2004 Australian play by Tony Briggs, was inspired by the true story of Briggs’ mother and aunt, who sang in the quartet that entertained American troops during the Vietnam War.
The film features renditions of classic Motown hits that showcase the voice of Jessica Mauboy, an Australian Idol alumnus. The Sapphires mixes humour with serious drama, a balance maintained by the cast’s charisma and lackadaisical charm.
Featuring period recreations, The Sapphires hits all the right notes with energy and spirit in this tribute to four women for whom success as performers was just the beginning.
The film screens Sunday (Nov. 17) at 1, 4 and 7 p.m., and Monday (Nov. 18) at 7 p.m. at Avalon Cinema in Woodgrove Centre. Tickets $12. Subscriptions to the series are still available.
