The Senior Drama Class at David Thompson Secondary School (DTSS) is getting ready to break out the laughs at their special end-of-year show, The Greek Mythology Olympiaganza. Silena Ewen is the instructor of the group, who has worked with the students to prepare for the show.
“If you have ever seen a condensed Shakespeare play, then think of this as a condensed Greek mythology. They cover most of Greek mythology in a two-act play,” she said. Ewen went on to say the play is infused with a lot of teenage humour, which makes it a very funny play.
“We wanted to do a comedy. Something fun and upbeat for the end of the school year. The students get a short list of plays and then decide which one they want to do. There are a lot of togas, a lot of props and random stuff. There are about 30 students this year, which is the largest class we have had in a number of years. It is a big play with a big cast,” Ewen said.
The narrators of the play this year are Genesey O’Conner and Blayr Lightfoot. The students are happy to be the narrators for the evening as they will spend most of the play on-stage and make many of the jokes. Both actresses have been involved with drama for a number of years. “It is like a family. We are all very close and everyone works very well together,” said O’Conner.
As for why they have been in drama so long, the girls share what the experience is like for them.
“I love acting. It is such an adrenaline rush for me and I can’t get that anywhere else,” O’Conner said
“Being on stage is a place sometimes where you are more comfortable than you are anywhere else. It is such a creative outlet where you can be yourself. Everyone in there is cool with it,” Lightfoot added.
As for the play and why people should come out for the performance Lightfoot said, “The play is very satirical. It is hilarious and educational as well. Why not? It is just something funny and entertaining. It is students doing it. We have come together and created something worth seeing.”
Ewen added, “It is a laugh a second. You may need to bring a tissue not because it is sad but because you will be laughing so hard you will be crying. Also you should support these kids. They have done a wonderful job.”
The performances will be held on June 10 and 11 at the DTSS theatre with a start time of 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 with students getting in for $5.
