After a sold-out performance last year, Patricia Cano is returning to the ACT Arts Centre in a one-woman cabaret.

Cano will be playing the role of Marie-Louise, a gossiping postal worker who knows everything about everyone in the fictional town of Lovely.

The (Post) Mistress is a musical written by Tomson Highway set in Northern Ontario in the 1960s.

There is both a French version of the play and a Cree one. The English version will incorporate lyrics from both.

The play was published in 2013 and the soundtrack album featuring Cano was released in 2014.

Cano has worked extensively with Canadian playwright Tomson Highway, a Cree writer and composer.

“Tomson Highway kept asking me to sing his music. I thought, ‘Oh well, yeah sure.’ And then by saying ‘yes,’ I travelled a lot, sang a lot. And as the years went by, I began to believe it and get better, and improve and to write,” Cano said in an interview last year.

She has performed in Highway’s world premiere of Rose, a musical set on the Wasaychigan Hill Reserve in 1992, and four other productions of The (Post) Mistress alongside the playwright on the piano.

Last year, Cano took to the stage at the ACT, performing her own blend of music, based in traditional rhythms – Peruvian, Brazilian, afro-Peruvian, afro-Brazilian, mixed with fusion and jazz.

CBC News described The (Post) Mistress album as “jazzy and fun” in a 2014 review.

The Arts Club Theatre Company production of The (Post) Mistress, starring Cano, directed by John Cooper, with Michael Creber on piano and Chris Startup on saxophone will be at The ACT Arts Centre, 11944 Haney Place, at 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 22.

Tickets are $45 for adults, $40 for seniors and $15 for youth.
