The Kumugwe Cultural Society is hosting “Sharing Our Spirit” – an evening with Grammy Award-winning singer Joanne Shenandoah.
Joanne will be singing and speaking to the audience.
This free public event will take place at the Kumugwe Ceremonial Big House, on Tuesday, April 16 from 6:30-8 p.m.
The Kumugwe Dancers will open the evening with a performance.
The Kumugwe Dancers take great pride in preserving the ancient traditions of their ancestors. Through sharing the songs and dances of the Komoks and Kwakwakawakw peoples, the Kumugwe Dancers are able to help facilitate respect and understanding within the local community and communities abroad.
Taking their name from the traditional big house that sits within the heart of the Komoks First Nation, members of the dance troupe have been practising and performing together since 2001. The Kumugwe Dancers feel that by encouraging young members of their community to learn the ancient songs and dances of their people, they will ensure the survival of the culture for generations to come.
The evening will highlight the teachings and cultural expressions of Shenandoah’s people, the Haudenosaunee- Iroquoian.
Shenandoah has been described as a peace advocate, a humanitarian, who works towards universal peace and understanding amongst all peoples.
The I-Hos Gallery will be hosting a meet and greet with the Grammy Award-winning singer from 5- 6 p.m., where her recordings will also be available for purchase.
