Children building snowmen, making snow angels, peeking at a bulging Christmas stocking, waiting in the rain for the parade to begin, taking walks in the park or just hanging out with the family dog, bring memories and smiles to mind.
Now until May 2, local artist Carolyne Herperger has several paintings depicting her granddaughters with these childhood activities at the Showcase Gallery in the South Cariboo Business Centre at 475 Birch Ave.
“Every year, I usually pick some subject to work on, such as water, mountains, people,” Herperger says, adding she does this to learn more about the subject and improve her painting techniques.
“This year, I picked people, and because I had the opportunity to display my art, I thought I would use the pictures of my grandchildren to showcase.”
A lot of the paintings are back views, says Herperger who adds she is becoming more and more comfortable with faces – it’s something she is continually learning.
Herperger has been interested in art since she was a young girl, but having a family to look after took up a lot of her time. Once her children were on their own, a recurring thought “use it or lose it” motivated her to start sketching, drawing and eventually painting.
Living in the Cariboo since 1948, Herperger has captured many Cariboo seasons that she has experienced in her paintings.
She has experimented with many different mediums over the years and recently has focused on acrylic on canvas, which is the medium used in all the pictures hanging at the Showcase Gallery.
Herperger has painted since the late 1990s and is a member of the Cariboo Artists Guild (CAG).
For more information about Showcase Gallery and CAG, folks are welcome to attend meetings held at noon on the first Tuesday of the month downstairs at the Parkside Art Gallery, 401 Cedar Avenue.
Pamphlets and application forms are also available at the gallery’s front desk.
