Great art on film returns with Munch 150

Vernon Performing Arts Centre Society and Vernon Public Art Gallery present second of three films showcasing the works of great artists.

The Vernon and District Performing Arts Centre Society and the Vernon Public Art Gallery are presenting the second of three films showcasing the works of great artists.

Munch 150 showcases the exhibition of the same name that was co-hosted in 2013 by the Oslo’s National Museum and the Munch Museum to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Edvard Munch’s birth.

The film, which screens Saturday, July 5 at the Vernon Performing Arts Centre, also reveals exclusive behind-the-scene moments of the exhibition’s preparation, which normally go unseen by the public.

Hailed as a “once in a lifetime show,” the exhibition achieved global interest when one of Munch’s four The Scream paintings recently set a public art auction record, selling for $120 million.

“Many know Munch as the man who painted The Scream, but his complete works are remarkable in their own right,” reads a press release from the Performing Arts Centre. “With 220 paintings on display, the exhibition brought together the greatest number of Munch’s key works in one place, celebrating the works of one of the greatest artists to have ever lived.”

Scenes from the exhibition are interwoven with an in-depth biography of Munch’s life from the mid-19th century to the German occupation of Norway in the Second World War.

Host Tim Marlow and special guests delve into the works of one of the towering figures of modern art.

Tickets for Munch 150 are $18 for adults, $13 for students, and are available through the Ticket Seller box office at 250-549-SHOW (7469), www.ticketseller.ca. The film screens July 5 at 1 p.m.
