Guest pianist joins OSO for Rachmaninoff

Symphony performs Mercure, Rachmaninoff, Franck April 19 in Kelowna and April 18 in Vernon.

The Okanagan Symphony Orchestra welcomes pianist Minsoo Sohn to the stage as they this week in Vernon and Kelowna.

Sohn is known as a performer with poetic vision and musical intelligence; described by the Boston Globe as an artist, a man who will create life in music, find listeners, and reward them.

“We are excited to welcome  Minsoo to perform with the Okanagan Symphony Orchestra for the first time, ” said Scott Wilson, general manager of the orchestra. “Minsoo’s flair combined with the talent of our orchestra will leave  guests enjoying a performance with pieces ranging between heroic and the tenderly romantic.”

The OSO will perform Pierre Mercure’s Kaleidoscope, one of the composers earliest pieces written in 1947-48.

Sohn then joins the orchestra to perform Piano Concerto No. 2 written by Sergei Rachmaninoff a piece that displays its emotions directly, particularly warmth and melancholy.

The final piece of this concert is Symphony in D Minor composed by Cesar Franck which is filled with bursts of slow movement to dramatic fury.

“As well, as part of the OSO outreach program, Sohn will also be offering a masterclass workshop in Kelowna on Friday, April 19 from 3 to 5 p.m., providing an opportunity to learn from one of Canada’s best performers,” Wilson said. “Musicians of all ages are looking forward to the opportunity to listen and learn, and anyone with an interest in observing this workshop is welcome to join us.” The workshop takes place at the Christ Lutheran Church at 2091 Gordon Dr.

Kaleidoscope opens April 18 in Vernon with a second concert April 19 at the Kelowna Community  Theatre. Tickets for performances are available at Kelowna Actors Studio, 250-862-2867 and Vernon & District Performing Arts Centre 250-549-7469 or online from www.okanagansymphony.com.
