COMMUNITY

• Active Witness Workshop: Sept. 20 & 27, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.; online; Hosted by Delta’s Organizing Against Racism and Hate (OARH) Committee. The Delta OARH Committee is pleased to offer this free two-part workshop with Anti-racism and Diversity Consultant Angela Ma Brown. Have you ever witnessed a racist or discriminatory incident but didn’t know what to say or do and felt conflicted and regretful about not responding? This two-session series will help participants develop their “response-ability” or readiness to respond to such incidents. Participants will engage in some experiential learning and empathy building activities to better understand the theoretical underpinnings of prejudice, discrimination and oppression, with an emphasis on racism. The goal is to learn to use a wide range of verbal and behavioural responses as an “active witness” when one witnesses someone being victimized by a negative, discriminatory remark and/or inequitable treatment. Participants will learn to shift from “passive bystanders” to “active witnesses” and will feel more empowered to respond to racism and discrimination on an individual basis. Together, we can “break the silence” and make an ethical commitment to fight prejudice, discrimination and oppression of any form individually and collectively. To register, visit eventbrite.ca/e/active-witness-workshop-cohort-2-tickets-166768215221. (Please ensure you register for both sessions.)
