• Urban Safari: July 28, 2 p.m. to 2:45 p.m.; George Mackie Library; Creeping, crawling, leaping, flying – Urban Safari’s rescued wild animals move in all kinds of ways. Come meet some animals and hear their stories. Learn how to protect and care for animals in the wild. Tickets are required and are available for free at the library for pick up in person starting July 21.

• Summer Nights with Appies and Friends: July 28, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.; Kennedy Seniors’ Recreation Centre, 11760 88 Ave.; Join us for an entertaining evening of great nibbles and live music. We will be serving up hot and cold appetizers, plus some sweets. Enjoy the first drink — alcoholic or non-alcoholic — on us. A cash bar will also be available. • Mad Science: Aug. 4, 11 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.; George Mackie Library; Up, up and away! Join the Mad Scientists and investigate the power of air with hot air balloons, vortex generators and even a hovercraft. Be amazed as you discover some of the wild and wonderful behaviours of air. Tickets are required and are available for free at the library for pick up in person starting July 28.

• Tsawwassen Sun Festival: Aug. 5-7; Winskill Park and South Delta Recreation Centre; Enjoy a slow-pitch tournament all weekend long, as well as activities and entertainment in Winskill Park and the parade down 56th Street. Don’t forget about the drive-in showing of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story at Beach Grove Elementary on Sunday, Aug. 6 at 8:30 p.m. Visit sunfestival.ca for details.

• North Delta Show and Shine: Aug. 12, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Sungod Recreation Centre; In its sixth year, the North Delta Show and Shine is getting bigger and better. Check out dozens of classic and vintage cars, have a bite to eat at the food truck, and enjoy music from the live DJ. Awards presentation at 2 p.m. Do you have a hot rod, muscle car, restored antique or foreign model? We’d love to see your vehicle at the Show and Shine. • Pop-Up Button Making Workshop for Teens: Aug. 12, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.; George Mackie Library; Drop in for our workshop and leave with shiny new buttons. Create images inspired by your favourite books or your own artwork, using coloured markers, pencils and collage materials. All supplies will be provided, just bring your ideas.

• Poetry Night in Punjabi: Aug. 15, 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.; George Mackie Library; Come hear two published poets/authors read and discuss their work and answer questions from the audience. This evening is offered in collaboration with Kendri Punjabi Lekhak Sabha, Uttari Amrika and Punjabi Lekhak Manch – Vancouver.

• Dog Days of Summer: Aug. 16, 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m.; Kennedy Seniors Recreation Centre, 11760 88 Ave.; We’re celebrating our second annual Dog Days of Summer with a fun afternoon which will include a visit from some special four-legged friends. Come and meet local assistance and therapy dogs with their handlers. Enjoy tea, coffee and ice cream with fresh blueberries. Tickets are only $4. Call 604-594-2717 for ticket information.

• Kellie Haines: Aug. 16, 2 p.m. to 2:45 p.m.; George Mackie Library; Walk on the wild side with ventriloquist Kellie Haines and her puppet friends Magrau the Bird and Kamilla the Frog. Enjoy stories, songs and dancing. Watch and wonder just who is doing all the talking. Lots of laughs and opportunities to join in the fun with this show. Tickets are required and are available for free at the library for pick up in person starting August 9.

• Paws 4 Stories: Aug. 19, 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.; George Mackie Library; Paws 4 Stories is a St. John’s Ambulance therapy dog community service that promotes improvement in children’s reading skills. When a child reads with a dog, they start to relax and forget about feeling nervous about reading. (Dogs make very supportive listeners.) Therapy dogs and their volunteers will listen to children who want to practice reading aloud. This is a free program for ages 6 and up. Space is limited. so please register by phone or in person after 10 a.m. on the day of the program for your 15-minute reading session.

• Starry Night: Aug 19; Deas Island Regional Park; Join us at Starry Night for an evening to explore nature and Deas Island Park by starlight, featuring nature discovery stations, crafts, drumming entertainment, and a lantern-lit evening walk along a one-kilometer trail. Bring your flashlight to illuminate hidden surprises. More details to come.

• Concerts in the Park: The Flanagans: Aug. 23, 7 p.m.; North Delta Social Heart Plaza; Enjoy our series of free outdoor concerts within a park setting. The Flanagans bring Canadian folk/East Coast traditional tunes for a wonderful evening. Please bring your own blanket or lawn chair. Concerts are cancelled in inclement weather. • Little Mermaid Auditions: Aug. 27 and 29; The Fraser Valley Gilbert and Sullivan Society is a charitable organization providing quality entertainment to our communities using local talent, including numerous children. The Society is holding auditions for its 2017 Christmas pantomime, “The Little Mermaid,” running Nov. 23 to Dec. 3 at the Surrey Arts Centre. It is looking for 30 or so people to fill a variety of roles, including leads, singers, dancers and a children’s chorus. • Teen Night: Pizza and Games: Aug. 29, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.; George Mackie Library; Do you love to play board games? Are you between 12 and 19 years old? Then come to the library for a fun night of gaming and free pizza. Games and snacks provided by Imperial Hobbies.

• Future of Delta Libraries Public Engagement Meeting: Sept. 6, 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.; George Mackie Library; Come discuss the future Delta’s libraries.

• Day at the Farm: Sept. 9, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Westham Island Herb Farm, 4690 Kirkland Rd.; Bring the whole family out to spend a Day at the Farm. Admission is free or by donation to the food bank. Come and see all that your local farming community has to offer, including: hay wagon farm tours, B.C. fresh potato dig, antique tractors/farm equipment, B.C. Dairy Association milking demo, mini live auction, draft horse plowing, wildlife conservation displays, rope-making and farrier demos, fresh local produce for sale and Vancouver food trucks. Don’t miss the musical talent show featuring Delta youth at 11:45 a.m., or prepare your best signature dish using a local ingredient and enter to win our homemade food contest at noon. As this is a working farm, please leave your dogs at home.

• Luminary Festival: Sept. 9; Sunstone Park, 10400 Delsom Cres.; It’s a special, sparkling end-of-summer festival. Illuminate yourselves with costumes and lights, and create a lantern to light the way. This year, in honour of Canada’s 150th birthday, we invite you to wear red and white and light up the night for a chance to win prizes.

• Parent Child Mother Goose: Mondays, 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.; George Mackie Library; Discover fun with rhymes, songs and stories with this interactive program for caregivers and babies 15 months and younger. Mother Goose helps your baby learn speech and language skills. Healthy snacks are provided. (Due to funding this program is open to Delta residents only.)

• Storytime: Tuesdays through Aug. 8, 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.; George Mackie Library; Introduce kids to the love of books and language with Storytime. Children and caregivers will enjoy interactive stories, songs, rhymes and more. Storytime prepares children to learn to read. Suitable for ages 2 to 6.

• Settlement Workers – Punjabi/English: Alternate Tuesdays (August 1, 15 & 29), 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.; George Mackie Library; Are you a newcomer to Canada who needs help adjusting to your new life? Free and confidential services are offered to help newcomers with all their needs during the process of settling into their new community. Settlement and integration services are free for immigrants, refugees and their families in B.C.

• Delta Scottsdale Lions Club: Second and fourth Tuesday of each month; The Lions Club is a service club that welcomes both ladies and men. • Recovery International Weekly Meetings: Tuesdays, 7 p.m.; North Delta Evangelical Free Church, 11300 84th Ave.; Recovery International is a weekly community-based self-help mental health group that offers tools and techniques that participants can use to deal with depression, anxiety, impulse control, anger management and a variety of other nervous and mental heath issues. The self-help systems used were developed by the late neuro-psychiatrist Abraham A. Low M.D. and have been helping people for over 70 years. Meetings are led by trained group leaders.

• FVRL Book Clubs: Second Tuesday of the month, 7:15 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., and fourth Thursday of the month, 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.; George Mackie Library; Join us to discuss books in a casual setting. New members are welcome. Books are provided.

• Supporting Family Resilience Group: Wednesdays, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.; Delta office – Canadian Mental Health Association Vancouver-Fraser, 4871 Delta St.; The Canadian Mental Health Association Vancouver-Fraser offers a no-cost support group for parents and caregivers of youth and young adults who are working through mental health and/or substance use concerns. • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) Group: First Wednesday of every month, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.; North Delta; Canadian Mental Health Association Vancouver-Fraser offers an obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) group for individuals with OCD and/or their friends and family. Our facilitated groups offer emotional and social support, encouragement and education in a confidential, non- judgmental setting. Help your baby develop speech and language skills – enjoy bouncing, singing and rhyming with stories. Babytime is a fun, social bonding activity for babies and caregivers. Suitable for babies 23 months and younger.

• LEGO® Club: Thursdays through Aug. 10, 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.; George Mackie Library; Love LEGO®? We provide the LEGO®, you bring your imagination! Come play, create, and experiment. LEGO® Club is a fun afternoon program for kids. Children under five must be accompanied by an adult.

• Mental Health Resiliency Support Group: Second and fourth Thursday of each month, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.; South Delta; Canadian Mental Health Association Vancouver-Fraser offers a mental health resiliency support group in South Delta for individuals living with a mental health concern or experiencing symptoms. • Monthly Surrey Prostate Cancer Support Group Meeting: Last Saturday of every month, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.; Valley View Memorial Gardens, 14644 72nd Ave., Surrey; The Surrey PCSG provides awareness, public education, advocacy, support and research into the prevention, detection, treatment and cure of prostate cancer for men in Delta, Surrey, White Rock and Langley. • Canadian Federation of University Women, North Delta/Surrey: CFUW is a national non-partisan, voluntary, self-funded organization working to improve the status of women and to promote human rights, public education, social justice and peace. Every year, CFUW and its clubs award close to $1 million to women to help them pursue post-secondary studies and also provide funding for library and creative arts awards. CFUW clubs provide learning and fellowship through lecture series, book clubs and issues groups, work to prevent violence against women and child poverty, and promote early learning and child care.
