• Be Inspired by Photographer Barry J. Brady: May 25, 7 p.m.; Kennedy Seniors Recreation Centre; Barry J. Brady is an award-winning fine art photographer. His work spans from dramatic landscapes to urban and street photography. He runs the largest photo walking group in Vancouver, is a regular contributor to Digital Photography School (the biggest online blog on photography) and runs photography trips across Canada, leading small groups of photographers into amazing places like the Yukon, Broughton Archipelago and other remote destinations. Barry has been fortunate to take photographs from amazing places like Machu Picchu, Antarctica, the Atacama Desert, and the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro. The cost to attend will be $3, with coffee and biscuits for an additional $1.

• Open Mic: May 26, 7:30 p.m.; Kennedy Seniors Recreation Centre, 11760 88th Ave.; This is the last open mic until the end of September. Singers, musicians, poets, actors and dancers are invited to take part in this variety show. Patti McGregor emcees this event. General public is welcome to come. • Ladner May Days: May 26-28, hours vary; Memorial Park; Ladner May Days has been a community favourite for 120 years! Enjoy rides, refreshments and the parade. • Egg Drop Challenge: May 27, 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.; George Mackie Library; Learn to use different materials to help an egg survive an epic eight-foot drop. Will your egg survive the fall? Suitable for children ages eight to 12.

• Oh Canada! And Beyond – A Choral Landscape: May 27, 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.; South Delta Baptist Church, 1988 56th St., Tsawwassen; The award-winning Delta Choral Society is pleased to present a spring concert filled with joy celebrating Canada’s 150th birthday. Join the Delta Community Choir, Tapestry and our children’s choir as we explore the meaning of being Canadian through music. The choirs will also share their love of a variety of styles of choral music. It’s a performance with something for everyone. Tickets cost $20 for adults, $15 for students and seniors, and children under 12 get in free. Tickets available online at deltachoral.ca, at the door or from any choir member.

• Teen Night: Pizza and Games: May 30, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.; George Mackie Library; Do you love to play board games? Are you between 12 and 19 years old? Then come to the library for a fun night of gaming and free pizza. Games and snacks provided by Imperial Hobbies.

• Future Delta 2.0: June 3, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.; George Mackie Library; Learn how researchers at UBC worked with local community partners here in Delta to develop an exciting new video game that teaches players how to address the very real effects of climate change. Find out how you can get involved with games for change such as Future Delta 2.0.

• Whole Lot of Art Artisan Market: June 4, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; North Delta Recreation Centre; Watershed Artworks Society’s spring artisan market combines with the North Delta Farmers’ Market for a day of fine art and good food.

• Zumba Gold 50+: June 5, 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.; Kennedy Seniors Recreation Centre, 11760 88th Ave.; Join us for this free class and enjoy the energy, enthusiasm and fun. • 75 Ways to Save on Household Expenses: June 6, 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.; George Mackie Library; Learn practical and easy ways to reduce utility, cable, phone and internet bills; reduce your grocery bills; trim your personal expenses and more. • Nutrition as You Age: June 8, 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.; Kennedy Seniors Recreation Centre, 11760 88th Ave.; Gwendolyn Megrian, certified sports and fitness nutritionist and personal trainer, presents an informative free lecture on nutritional guidelines and recommendations for the older adult. • Parkinson’s & Stroke: What Happens Next?: June 8, 12 p.m. to 12:45 p.m.; Kennedy Seniors Recreation Centre, 11760 88th Ave.; Margaret Chorbajian is a dedicated volunteer instructor at Kennedy who has specialized music programs for individuals with compromised vocal abilities due to Parkinson’s Disease, strokes and other neurological challenges. Serop Chorbajian is an equally dedicated lecturer and presenter for the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Join this remarkable couple for a free candid chat about these life-changing diagnoses. • Pop-Up Button Making Workshop for Teens: July 8, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.; George Mackie Library; Drop in for our workshop and leave with shiny new buttons. Create images inspired by your favourite books or your own artwork, using coloured markers, pencils and collage materials. All supplies will be provided, just bring your ideas.

• Summertime Dinner and Dance 50+: June 9, 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.; Kennedy Seniors Recreation Centre, 11760 88th Ave.; Music will be provided by The Summer Time Band, featuring songs from the 50s and 60s, plus a little bit of country. The menu for the evening includes chicken, lasagna, caesar salad, dinner buns, apple crumble, tea/coffee and a cash bar. Tickets cost $20 and are available until June 2. • Soap Box Derby: June 10; Tsawwassen; On your marks, get set, go! The 2nd annual youth Soap Box Derby is coming to Tsawwassen on Saturday, June 10. Details to come.

• Textile Fix-it: June 10, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.; George Mackie Library; Join us for a free textile fix-it event hosted by Frameworq™. Supplies will be provided and skills will be shared so you can fix your favourite garments. Our goal is to divert textiles from ending up in the landfill and bring repair skills back to use with patches, darning and stitches. No experience necessary. Drop in anytime.

• Paws 4 Stories: June 17, 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.; George Mackie Library; Paws 4 Stories is a St. John’s Ambulance therapy dog community service that promotes improvement in children’s reading skills. When a child reads with a dog, they start to relax and forget about feeling nervous about reading. (Dogs make very supportive listeners.) Therapy dogs and their volunteers will listen to children who want to practice reading aloud. This is a free program for ages 6 and up. Space is limited. so please register by phone or in person after 10 a.m. on the day of the program for your 15-minute reading session.

• Poetry Night in Punjabi: June 20, 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.; George Mackie LIbrary; Come hear two published poets/authors read and discuss their work and answer questions from the audience. This evening is offered in collaboration with Kendri Punjabi Lekhak Sabha, Uttari Amrika and Punjabi Lekhak Manch – Vancouver.

• Delta Fire Open House: June 24, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Hall 3, 11375 84 Ave.; Come check out the Delta Fire and Emergency Services open house.

• North Delta Family Day: June 25; North Delta Community Park; Enjoy the annual parade along 112 Street from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and then make your way to the park for festival activities and entertainment, such as the famous BBQ, face painting, rides and more. • South Delta Garden Tour: June 25, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Ladner, Tsawwassen and Boundary Bay; The South Delta Garden Club is hosting a Garden Tour in celebration of its 65th anniversary, including a look at the “Secret Garden.” A limited amount of tickets will be sold for this event, $15 in advance or $20 day of. Tickets available at Harris Nurseryland, Sunnyside Nurseries and West Coast Seeds.

• Canada Day — 150 years!: July 1; various locations; Canada is 150 years old this year. To celebrate, the Corporation of Delta has a variety of special events. Details to come.

• Tour de Delta: July 7-9; various locations; Tour de Delta promises three amazing days of competitive cycling action and fun festivals. 2017 event and race details to come.

• Déjà Vu Vintage Market: July 8, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Wellbrook Winery, 4626 88th St., Ladner; Another fun day of vintage shopping at Wellbrook Winery. There’ll be amazing treasures to be found with over 40 super talented vintage vendors. Brad Hadley will be returning to serenade you while you shop, and the food trucks will be there with their tasty treats. Don’t forget the wine tasting! Selfie stations will be available so you can snap a pic and remember the fun you had at Déjà Vu Vintage Market! Admission costs $5 at event, or $4 online. • Positively Canadian: July 8, 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.; George Mackie Library; Learn interesting or quirky facts, stats and tips about Canada’s history, geography, people, culture and more in this fun and informative celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday with Heather Pattullo, author of Positively Canadian: A Fun Guide to Canadian Language, Culture and History.

• Parent Child Mother Goose: Mondays, 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.; George Mackie Library; Discover fun with rhymes, songs and stories with this interactive program for caregivers and babies 15 months and younger. Mother Goose helps your baby learn speech and language skills. Healthy snacks are provided. (Due to funding this program is open to Delta residents only.)

• Intermediate English Conversation: Tuesdays through May 30 (except May 2), 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.; George Mackie Library; Intermediate English is training for newcomers who want to improve their accent reduction, practice conversation skills and gain confidence with speaking in public. Held in partnership with the Progressive Intercultural Community Services Society (PICS) with funding from the Delta Literacy Committee.

• Settlement Workers – Punjabi/English: Alternate Tuesdays (June 6 & 20, July 4 & 18, August 1, 15 & 29), 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.; George Mackie Library; Are you a newcomer to Canada who needs help adjusting to your new life? Free and confidential services are offered to help newcomers with all their needs during the process of settling into their new community. Settlement and integration services are free for immigrants, refugees and their families in B.C.

• Painting the Stars: Science, Religion and an Evolving Faith: Tuesdays, through June 27, 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.; Trinity Lutheran Church, 11040 River Rd.; Many assume that being a person of faith is contrary to engaging scientific methods of understanding what is real, that somehow one needs to “check one’s brain at the door” of the church in order to take a leap of faith. But perhaps there is another way to live in faith without abandoning the insights of modern science. Come, invite your friends who wonder with you, and join the conversation. We value your insights, whether you are an atheist, agnostic, disenchanted, suspicious, just curious, or one of our respected interfaith neighbours. Come to any or all meetings, for free. • Delta Scottsdale Lions Club: Second and fourth Tuesday of each month; The Lions Club is a service club that welcomes both ladies and men. • Recovery International Weekly Meetings: Tuesdays, 7 p.m.; North Delta Evangelical Free Church, 11300 84th Ave.; Recovery International is a weekly community-based self-help mental health group that offers tools and techniques that participants can use to deal with depression, anxiety, impulse control, anger management and a variety of other nervous and mental heath issues. The self-help systems used were developed by the late neuro-psychiatrist Abraham A. Low M.D. and have been helping people for over 70 years. Meetings are led by trained group leaders.

• FVRL Book Clubs: Second Tuesday of the month, 7:15 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., and fourth Thursday of the month, 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.; George Mackie Library; Join us to discuss books in a casual setting. New members are welcome. Books are provided.

• Next Chapter Book Club: Wednesdays through June 14, 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.; George Mackie Library; The Next Chapter Book Club offers a weekly opportunity for adults with differing abilities to read and learn together, talk about books, make friends and have fun in a relaxed community setting.

• Supporting Family Resilience Group: Wednesdays, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.; Delta office – Canadian Mental Health Association Vancouver-Fraser, 4871 Delta St.; The Canadian Mental Health Association Vancouver-Fraser offers a no-cost support group for parents and caregivers of youth and young adults who are working through mental health and/or substance use concerns. • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) Group: First Wednesday of every month, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.; North Delta; Canadian Mental Health Association Vancouver-Fraser offers an obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) group for individuals with OCD and/or their friends and family. Our facilitated groups offer emotional and social support, encouragement and education in a confidential, non- judgemental setting. • Wind Down to Bedtime Storytime: Thursdays through June 29, 7 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.; George Mackie Library; Is your child ready for bed? Not until they wind down at storytime! Join us every Thursday night for specially chosen bedtime stories, breathing exercises, songs and some sleepy yoga poses. Wear your pajamas and bring your favourite stuffy.

• Mental Health Resiliency Support Group: Second and fourth Thursday of each month, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.; South Delta; Canadian Mental Health Association Vancouver-Fraser offers a mental health resiliency support group in South Delta for individuals living with a mental health concern or experiencing symptoms. • Knit & Stitch: Fridays through Aug. 25, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.; George Mackie Library; Pack up your needles and yarn and head to the library. Knitting, crocheting, quilting and weaving are fun ways to connect across the generations. Join members of all ages and abilities to share ideas, techniques and good conversation.

• Monthly Surrey Prostate Cancer Support Group Meeting: Last Saturday of every month, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.; Valley View Memorial Gardens, 14644 72nd Ave., Surrey; The Surrey PCSG provides awareness, public education, advocacy, support and research into the prevention, detection, treatment and cure of prostate cancer for men in Delta, Surrey, White Rock and Langley. • Crossroads United Church Monthly Community Dinner: Fourth Saturday of every month, doors open at 4:30 p.m., dinner starts at 5 p.m.; Crossroads United Church, 7655 120th St.; Crossroads United Church invites you to their monthly community dinner. • Canadian Federation of University Women, North Delta/Surrey: CFUW is a national non-partisan, voluntary, self-funded organization working to improve the status of women and to promote human rights, public education, social justice and peace. Every year, CFUW and its clubs award close to $1 million to women to help them pursue post-secondary studies and also provide funding for library and creative arts awards. CFUW clubs provide learning and fellowship through lecture series, book clubs and issues groups, work to prevent violence against women and child poverty, and promote early learning and child care. • North Delta Newcomers and Friends: NDNF is a ladies social club. • Sungod Community Garden Plots: McKitrick Park, 7815 112th St.; Plots are 10’x10′, garden tools and water source provided, and cost $30 to rent.
