Craig Pedersen, a Montréal-based experimental trumpeter, is performing at the Alternator Centre for Contemporary Art in Kelowna this Friday, Aug. 22.
This remarkable musician will shatter one’s expectations of what the trumpet is capable of, creating a tapestry of sounds and textures through a dazzling array of extended techniques.
Pedersen has released eight albums of material, in a variety of ensembles ranging between composed material to improvisation, through jazz, free music, country and klezmer. Recent highlights of his work include collaborations with Lori Freedman, Nicolas Caloia, Evan Tighe, Aaron Lumley, Ian Birse and Laura Kavanaugh (Instant Places), Joel Kerr, and Mark Molnar (Kingdom Shore), as well as recording on the soundtrack for Robert Lepage’s Needles and Opium.
His method book of extended techniques for the trumpet, published by Berklee Press and Hal Leonard, is to be released this November.
Joining Pedersen will be local avant-garde saxophone and bassoonist Darren Williams. He pushes the limits of improvisation and extended instrumental technique into regions that are lyrical, terrifying, uncanny, and “more fun than spiked punch live” (Georgia Straight).
Williams has performed with Eugene Chadbourne, Chad van Gaalen, Myk Freedman, Mats Gustafsson, Ig Henneman and Han Bennink and co-leads and composes for the free jazz quintet Robots On Fire. His debut solo album Reed is available on Bug Incision Records.
The Alternator Gallery is in the Rotary Centre for the Arts. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 22, with the performance beginning at 8 p.m. sharp. Admission is $7 and $5 for Alternator Gallery members.
