Sit back and enjoy an intriguing afternoon of diverse, original tunes when the Harmonic Hatchery Band plays Feb. 28 in the Music on Sunday concert series at The Old School House Arts Centre.
Made up of clarinetist Liam Hockley, local pianist Ron Hadley, bassist Joey Smith and drummer Buff Allen, the ensemble places a high priority on interactive listening and group improvisation.
Hockley is a versatile clarinetist, performing classical repertoire to experimental contemporary music, jazz and free improvisation. He is currently pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts in clarinet performance at the UBC, supported by a prestigious four-year fellowship.
Also a dedicated classical musician, Liam has performed with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, Vancouver Island Symphony, Vancouver Metropolitan Orchestra, and has appeared as a soloist with the Victoria Symphony and the Greater Victoria Youth Orchestra.
Hadley is originally from the Boston area, where he took private lessons at the New England Conservatory with jazz piano legend Jaki Byard while studying theory and jazz improvisation at Berklee College of Music. He has performed throughout North America and Japan, and his lifelong professional involvement in the latter country led to his relocation to the Pacific Northwest.
Smith came to Victoria from Tennessee via the Glenn Miller Orchestra, with which he toured as bassist for more than two years. After earning his masters degree in music at the prestigious Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, he and his wife settled in Victoria in 1990.
Allen was born in Vancouver and has more than 40 years of professional playing experience in jazz, pop, theatre, recording studios, concert tours, television, and movies.
Sunday’s concert begins at 2:30 p.m. at TOSH, 122 Fern Road West in Qualicum Beach. Tickets are $16 each. For tickets or more info, call 250-752-6133 or visit ww.theoldschoolhouse.org.
