Jubilee Park is weeks away from transforming into a haven for concert goers and art lovers for the seventh annual Jam in Jubilee festival.
In addition to musical talent and handcrafted wares, this year will also feature local buskers and a film festival.
Previously known as Jammin’ in Jubilee, the by-donation series starts on July 7, and will run every Thursday night until Aug. 11.
The event is meant to promote the local arts and provide a venue for artists to grow, according to the Atangard Community Project. The group is hosting the event for the second year after taking over for the Abbotsford Downtown Business Association.
“There are a lot of people downtown who appreciate and are involved in the arts, and by having this event we’re celebrating that,” said Sophia Suderman, one of the organizers.
The concert aspect of the series will see two to three bands performing from 7-9 p.m., or until 10 p.m. on selected nights.
Musicians from Abbotsford and across the Fraser Valley will represent a variety of genres, including roots rock, indie pop, jazz fusion, acoustic rock and modern folk.
In addition, the arts market will be returning. Booths will showcase wares from artists and businesses, ranging from crafts to vintage clothing.
New to the event will be a side stage featuring non-musical acts.
It will be reserved for buskers – like jugglers, magicians and dancers – to perform between the headlining bands. And on Aug. 4, there will be a mini-film festival featuring three to four locally made flicks.
“We’re always looking to highlight the different arts in Abbotsford,” said Suderman.
The Atangard group is still accepting submissions for buskers and videos, stressing that everything must be age appropriate, as last year’s event drew out families, teens, young adults and grandparents.
Design submissions are also being encouraged for the Jam in Jubilee buttons.
In addition, the Atangard group is still looking for vendors and event sponsors.
