Local drumming/percussion sensation Joe Porter is back, and he’s bringing friends.
Born and raised in Fernie, Porter is bringing his energetic show to his hometown on Friday, Sept. 23. Performing with Porter are pianist Joel Goodfellow and percussionist Antoine Fatout from Le Havre, France.
They will perform an energetic mix of jazz, world and classical music, combining piano, vibraphone and drumset – a unique combination sure to spur the interest of music lovers.
“If you’re looking for a quiet Friday evening, then you’d best stay home,” said organizer Sylvia Elias. “But if you’re after something musically tasty and well into the wild side, come on out to this show.”
The trio will perform at Mountainside Church in Fernie at 7 p.m. on Friday. Mountainside houses Fernie’s beautiful, community-owned grand piano and provides a great concert setting.
Porter is a busy musician, teaching music and percussion at the University of Lethbridge, co-directing the Global Drums Ensemble, and teaching myriad world drumming classes including a class for formerly homeless people who are integrating back into society. Porter is also the principal percussionist of the Lethbridge Symphony Orchestra, and tours extensively on his own and with his duo partner Joel Goodfellow.
Goodfellow is based in Lethbridge, where he works as a teacher, performer and accompanist. This multi-award winning pianist has performed with the Okanagan, Kamloops and Youth Symphony orchestras, and has performed as a soloist and chamber musician throughout BC and Alberta.
Berklee College of Music graduate Antoine Fatout brings a wealth of experience and his abundant talent to the mix. He is a versatile performer whose dynamic style is much in demand, particularly in the jazz and Brazilian music scenes. Currently based in Columbus, Ohio, he works full time as a drummer and teacher.
Friday’s show begins at 7 p.m. Cash tickets at the door are $15 for adults and $12 for seniors and youth, with free admission for children 12 and under.
