The Kelowna Actors Studio Young Company presents the provocative and edgy Tony award-winning musical, Cabaret, two performances only, on Friday, July 4 and Saturday, July 5.
The production is the final fund-raising effort for the group of talented musical theatre actors, who will attend professional productions and workshops in New York City this August.
Young Company offers an advanced training and mentorship program for aspiring performing artists between the ages of 13-18 who are serious about pursuing post-secondary education and a career in theatre. They have worked for months with professional adult actors, older acting students, directors and choreographers resulting on the full stage production of Cabaret.
In New York, the company will have an opportunity to attend Roundabout Theatre’s production of Cabaret, meet the star of the production, Alan Cumming, and take workshops with the Broadway cast.
“Cabaret has a fascinating history,” says Randy Leslie, managing artistic director. “It is the winner of multiple Tonys, which were awarded three decades apart.”
Local music director Roslyn Frantz works the score brilliantly and the audience truly perceives the emotional pattern of the plot. Choreographer, Jennifer Davies brings a new edge and energy, which will make audiences feel like they’re in 1930’s Berlin.
Katia Wells-Green plays the production’s, and the Kit Kat Klub’s Emcee. She was recently seen in KAS’ critically acclaimed Company, and was previously seen in The Performance Troupe’s Rent.
Sally Bowles, the Kit Kat’s British performer, is portrayed by Julia Cherrille, a regular at Kelowna Actors Studio (South Pacific among others).
Delphine Litke, known to audiences for her iconic performances (Shrek, Nunsense), will portray Fraulein Schneider with Brandon Shalansky (39 Steps, Music Man) as Herr Schultz.
Rounding out the cast is Cory de Roos as writer Clifford Bradshaw, Mikayla Jones as Fraulein Kost.
Randy Leslie will play the villain, Ernst Ludwig.
The production also features familiar KAS faces Emma Butler, Marisa Piattelli and Andrea Sorestad as the Kit Kat Girls.
“Our theatre’s intimate setting is the perfect venue to morph into an infamous Berlin cabaret nightclub,” adds Leslie. “We are proud to present a unique twist on Cabaret, and our Young Company has certainly put their individual stamp on this timeless piece.”
Cabaret runs for two performances only, July 3 and 4 at 8 p.m.
