The Kelowna Art Gallery has succeeded in our attempt to set a world record. According to the website www.recordsetter.com, the Kelowna Art Gallery now holds the world record for the Highest Number of 4 x 6-Inch Works of Art Displayed in a Gallery.
A total of 4,154 postcard-sized original works of art on paper currently adorn the walls of our Scotiabank Studio and both sides of one of the Gallery corridors. In their entirety, the works comprise Local Views to make World News, which will remain on view through March 18, 2012.
On January 3, 2012, the Kelowna Art Gallery began accepting small-scale, Okanagan-themed, original, landscape-based works of art created by community members in an attempt to set a new world record. Arrival of submissions to the project was slow at first, but quickly gained momentum as community groups, local artists, media outlets, media personalities, schools, and other eager participants learned of the project. While most of the 4 x 6-inch-sized works arrived from Kelowna and the Okanagan region, the Gallery also received submissions from the Lower Mainland of BC, from Texas, and from as far away as India. The 4,154 submissions received by the Gallery far surpassed the desired goal of 2,500.
“We were hoping for a good response, and we received an overwhelming response,” says Nataley Nagy, Executive Director at the Kelowna Art Gallery. “All of us at the Kelowna Art Gallery wish to express sincere thanks to everyone who participated in this fascinating art project.” With the world record in place with recordsetter.com, the Gallery is also in the process of applying to the widely-known Guinness World Records group. Nagy continues, “We truly hope this project inspires museums, galleries, and other cultural organizations to challenge our record and undertake projects such as this of their own accord.”
The gathering of landscape works was inspired by the exhibition David Alexander: the Shape of Place, on view at the Gallery to March 25, 2012. In his work, Lake Country-based artist David Alexander captures a sense of place by conveying his experience of the landscape.
