The Key City Theatre unveiled its upcoming season at a gala event and video screening of the acts on Thursday, June 15, with an intense bill of music, theatre, comedy and dance set for the coming months.
Fresh off the celebration of its 25th anniversary, the Key City Theatre’s 2017/18 season features the return of some popular attractions, some new, cutting edge performances, and a series of shows that will attract audiences of all ages.
• On September 22, Rag Mop Theatre will offer audiences a unique dramatic experience with “Falling Awake,” a surreal physical comedy about a women and her deceased lover meeting in dreams.
• Comedian Mike Delamont, originally from Cranbrook, will officially launch the Cranbrook autumn, with the return of the Scottish Drag Queen. “Second Coming: God Is A Scottish Drag Queen Part II” is set for September 30.
• Renowned mandolin player John Reischmann and his band the Jaybirds, with special guests RedGirl, return to Cranbrook for Kootenanny on October 26.
•The Vancouver Arts Club features prominently in the upcoming year, starting November 10, with another popular sequel “Mum’s The Word: Part III.”
• A busy November also features the Barenaked Ladies on November 8. On November 30, dancer Mark Ikeda tells the story of his family’s interment in B.C. during the war years in “Sansei: The Storyteller.” And back by popular demand, the Barra McNeil’s Celtic Christmas is set for November 28.
• The dynamic brother-sister team of Bryan (cello) and Silvie Cheng (piano) — the Cheng2 Duo — kick off 2018 with some firey virtuosity, January 24.
• The very popular Winter Ale concert sale series, hosted by the Fisher Peak Performing Arts Society, will run throughout the winter at the Key City Theatre. Watch these pages for details.
* February, 2018, is the month of Russia (100 years after the Russian Revolution in February, 1917). Arts Club returns with “Onegin,” a powerful musical based on Pushkin’s 19th-century verse novel and Tchaikovsky’s 1879 opera adaptation, on February 6.
• Later in February, Cranbrook’s longtime friend Ballet Jörgen takes the stage with an original piece: “Anastasia,” a ballet based on the legendary Romanov princess. February 23.
• Also in February, the Purple Pirate says “Ahoy!” to local kids, with “High Jinx on the High Seas.” February 12.
• Fred Penner, a giant among children’s entertainers, is back in Cranbrook March 9.
• The Joe Trio takes classical music to an intriguing new place on March 10.
• As spring approaches, the a cappella harmonies, authentic costuming, and traditional dancing of Black Umfolosi from Zimbabwe will be there to greet it, March 15.
• Kids’ performance troupe Axis Theatre presents “Robinson Crusoe” on April 14.
• Coming for April 12-16: Rawk Camp, with Yukon-based band Speed Control, will help young musicians hone their rock music skills.
• Harry Manx, a musician who blends blues, folk and Hindustani classical music, is here for April 20.
• And magician, comedian and large-sized personality Wes Barker will take the stage in between his many TV appearances April 28.
