Langley Community Music School goes Bohemian

Bohemian Café performance inspired by the music, dance, costumes and story telling of folkloric gypsies

Inspired by the music, dance, costumes, and story telling of folkloric gypsies, violinist Andrea Neumann and pianist Alexandra Andrievsky are presenting Bohemian Café at Langley Community Music School’s (LCMS) Café Classico concert and commentary this Sunday, May 15 at 2:30 p.m.

Carrying a mystique that has intrigued and fascinated people for hundreds of years, the migrant Romani people, also known as Gypsies or Bohemians in early 19th century France, inspired many artists and writers to adopt their own interpretations of Bohemian lifestyle.  Throughout history, many notable modern classical composers have created a vast repertoire of works portraying romantic visions of gypsy gatherings full of music, dancing and singing.

Continuing the tradition, the Neumann-Andrievsky Duo will take audiences on a tour of this rich romanticized culture. The program will include works such as Brahms’ Scherzo, Bartók’s Roumanian Folk Dances, and Ravel’s Tzigane — Rapsodie de Concert.

Pianist Alexandra Andrievsky was born in Kiev, Ukraine, and studied at the Yehudi Menuhin School in England, the Rubin Academy of Music at Tel Aviv University and the Royal College of Music in London. She has performed and taught around the world and currently teaches at the Conservatory at Mount Royal University in Calgary.

Violinist Andrea Neumann hails from Calgary with a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Toronto and a Masters from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. An award-winning violinist and soloist, Andrea has performed with the likes of the Santa Rosa Symphony and the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra. A former artist in Residence at The Banff Centre, Andrea continues to teach and perform music from the Baroque period to present.

Audiences will get the opportunity to learn more about the artists and gain insights into the music during a pre-concert talk show hosted by LCMS artistic director Elizabeth Bergmann at 2:30 p.m. After a short break with coffee and refreshments, the Bohemian Café performance will begin at 3:30 p.m.

Tickets for the May Café Classico concert are $18 for adults, $15 for seniors and $10 for students. Call the box office at 604-534-2848.
