Langley poet inspires new art exhibit

Seniors can apply to have their art displayed locally.

Artists of a certain age are wanted for a display by the Langley Arts Council.

The council has put out the call for visual artists 60 and older to apply to be part of an exhibit that will show at the Timms Community Centre and the Township Civic Facility.

The council sees the exhibit as a way to honour older members of the local creative community.

The six-week exhibit starts May 4. People have until April 12 to apply and there’s no cost to take part.Art pieces must be wired and able to be hung on a wall. Each person can submit two items for consideration.

There’s details at the council website langleyarts.ca or people can contact directors@langleyarts.ca or 604-534-0781.

New exhibit

The new Fort Gallery exhibit features several artists who have created works inspired by Cezanne.

The idea for the exhibit, which runs April 5 to 23, came from local poet Susan McCaslin. She wrote Painter, Poet, Mountain: After Cézanne after living in Aix-en-Provence for three months in 2012.

She will be surrounded by the pieces created by gallery members. Works will encompass figure painting, still-life, and landscape, but with contemporary and locally thematic twists.

Inspired by Cezanne begins with a reading and book launch by McCaslin from 7 to 9 p.m. on April 6. It also serves as the gallery’s First Thursday multimedia arts event. Joining McCaslin will be Toronto’s Penn Kemp, an activist poet, performer and playwright, the inaugural Poet Laureate for London Ontario and a Life Member of the League of Canadian Poets.

Eclectic coffee

The Yaletown String Quartet brings jazz, blues, rock, pop, and ethnic music to the Langley Community Music School for its April 2 Concerts Cafe Classico.

Audience members sit with the performers for coffee and commentary starting at 2:30 p.m. before the concert at 3:30.

“The Yaletown String Quartet is very different from a traditional group,” said LCMS artistic director Elizabeth Bergmann. “Their programmes are uniquely their own due to the fact they arrange or compose their own material. This concert is sure to be a surprising and entertaining performance.”

Tickets are $18 for adults, $15 for seniors, and $10 for students. Call the box office at 604-534-2848 or visit langleymusic.com to purchase tickets. The concert is in the LCMS Rose Gellert Hall, 4899 207th St.
