The Kelowna Art Gallery is currently looking for volunteer docents (tour guides) for our school tour program. Interested applicants should enjoy a creative atmosphere, stimulating surroundings, and working with children. Volunteer docents lead exhibition tours, and all docents receive full instruction on the art in each exhibition and on working with students in a gallery setting.
Each year 8,000 students from schools throughout the Central Okanagan visit the Kelowna Art Gallery for a tour of exhibitions followed by a creative workshop as part of the school tour program. For many students, this is their very first experience in an art gallery.
To accommodate all of these classes and students the Kelowna Art Gallery requires a team of volunteer docents who help to bring the art alive through tours and engaging activities.
“Being a docent is such a rewarding experience,” says Helen Duckworth, a volunteer docent during the 2011/2012 school year. “One thing that surprised me early on was how much laughter there was. Most times it was either me or the kids or both of us laughing together and generally having a good time. My goal was to make sure everyone took away something valuable from the experience.”
The deadline for applications is Sept. 30.
