Legendary Lake Monsters band together for bassist

Vernon band The Legendary Lake Monsters hold fundraiser for their bassist Rod MacDonald after he received two life-saving brain surgeries

A group of musical friends are about to band together in support of Armstrong-based musician Rod MacDonald.

The Rockin’ for Rod benefit is to help the co-founder and bassist of The Legendary Lake Monsters recover after he received two life-saving brain surgeries to correct an AVF (arteriovenous fistula), an abnormal connection between an artery and a vein.

MacDonald was airlifted to Vancouver General Hospital Aug. 18 after suffering a series of seizures at home.

The resulting operations have been successful and the long road to recovery has begun, said MacDonald’s wife Lorna Tureski.

“Rod’s been at GF Strong Rehabilitation Centre since Sept. 12, a month to the day since his first seizure beside the fishpond at home” said Tureski in a letter to supporters. “The doctors tell us that Rod’s brain has suffered an insult and will simply take time to recover.”

MacDonald is expected to be discharged from the rehabilitation centre Nov. 9 three days before the Rockin’ for Rod benefit takes place in the ballroom at the Vernon Lodge (former Atrium Hotel).

The Nov. 12 event will feature performances by 6 Shades of Grey as well as by MacDonald’s bands, The Legendary Lake Monsters and Steel Wound.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m., with a deluxe buffet dinner at 7 p.m. and music and dancing from 8 p.m. until midnight.

Tickets for the benefit are $60 (includes dinner) and are available from band members or at the Vernon Lodge front desk, with proceeds going to help MacDonald and his family.
