The Strathcona Little Big Band (pictured right), Campbell River’s own 19-piece swing and jazz big band is returning to the Royal Coachman Pub, Sunday, Dec. 20 from 1-4 p.m. to bring this year’s highly successful Sunday afternoon jazz program to an end for 2015.
The band, largely comprised of local Campbell River musicians with a sprinkling of saxes from Courtenay, is a regular returning favorite to the pub for the past few years.
In addition to inspired and energetic solos by well known and respected local musicians like Roger Kirk and Jay Havelar on trumpet, Carrie Fowler on tenor sax and Suzie Christensen on alto sax, newcomers Evie Kenny, Colin Massie, Tom Tinsley and Dave Johnson also light things up on the cozy Coachman stage.
Cozy? Yep for sure! When you stack 19 musicians onto any platform the sound is big, the rhythm is hot and elbow room is at a premium! Rounding out the sets is the simply amazing Amy Lelliot on vocals bringing us some familiar standards and some warm Christmas cheer to boot. Admission is by donation and the chef inspired lunch menu is an added bonus well worth the visit.
