Little Red Robin who?

Mash-up: Kids’ theatre produces fractured fairy-tale.

South Shuswap Children’s Theatre (SSCT) presents Little Red Robin Hood by Flip Kobler and Cindy Marcus at the end of April.

We’ve all seen fractured fairy tales before, but never quite like this one, which takes a hilarious detour through Robin Hood’s Nottingham and Sherwood Forest.

Leave it to the dream team of Flip Kobler and Cindy Marcus, writers of multiple scripts for Disney, to come up with a fresh, hysterical twist on characters we all know.

Little Red Robin Hood must deal with the Big Bad Sheriff of the Naughty Hams (the Three Little Pigs, that is.) They do the bidding of Prince John, the vain emperor who is eager to try on his new magic suit being woven by Cinderella’s deceitful stepsisters.

With Humpty Dumpty, Black Sheep, Rose Red and Simple Simon acting as her Merry Men, Little Red Robin Hood must save all the village grannies of Sherwood Forest, including her own, an old woman who lives in a shoe, Mother Hubbard, as well as Mother Goose herself.

Along the way, she also wins the heart of the Pied Piper — aka Marion — who’s a touring celebrity musician with an arm-load of different Marys as groupies.

This SSCT production of Little Red Robin Hood includes a cast of 25 local children ages seven to 15, who have been working since October 2015 on developing characters and their acting chops.

Director Elizabeth Ann Skelhorne may be familiar to local audiences from her work with The Shuswap Theatre.

Skelhorne’s work includes the 2014 award- winning production of The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) and  2 x 2, Two One-Act Plays, Two Directors in 2015.

The SSCT provides an opportunity for Shuswap youth to take part in performing or working behind the scenes in full-scale theatre productions. By providing children with professional instruction, while fostering their own creativity, the SSCT gives children skills and experience they can take forward in life on whatever path they choose to pursue.

The South Shuswap Children’s Theatre is presenting three performances of Little Red Robin Hood on Sunday, April 24, Saturday, April 30 and Sunday, May 1 at Carlin Hall.

Doors open at 6 p.m. and the show starts at 6:30 p.m. on all the dates.

The activities of the South Shuswap Children’s Theatre are made possible through the efforts of a committed group of volunteers, grants from the Columbia Shuswap Regional District, BC Arts Council, Shuswap Community Foundation and many generous sponsors.

The stage door is always open to new volunteers and SSCT is currently seeking volunteers and sponsors for next season’s production.
